Heating and Cooling

Air Conditioners

Air conditioners remove heat and moisture from air in your home by blowing it across a coil filled with a liquid called refrigerant. This process lowers the temperature of the air and makes it drier, so it feels more comfortable. Both window units and central air conditioners use this basic approach.

The efficiency of central air conditioners is rated by seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) while window limits are rated in energy efficiency radio (EER). In both cases, the higher the number, the more efficient the unit operates. The most efficient units earn Energy Star® certification. With both types, it's important to select equipment that's the right size for the area to be cooled. In addition, regular maintenance will ensure that both types operate as efficiently as possible. Central units should be cleaned and serviced by a qualified technician yearly. Filters should be checked monthly on both types of units.
