Generators

A generator can be a very sensible tool for ensuring that freezers, incubators and other equipment that need power will have it - even during a power outage. However, incorrectly installing a generator to the electric supply for your home or business can have deadly consequences for co-op lineworkers. Without the proper hardware, a generator can backfeed into the co-op's wires and injure or kill a lineworker.

The proper way to connect a generator is to use a power transfer switch that has been installed by a licensed electrician according to code. Power transfer switches allow you to switch easily from power lines to the generator and back. In addition to keeping your generator from backfeeding into co-op wires, these switches protect your electrical equipment from being overloaded when power is restored. Contact your REMC for assistance if you are considering purchasing and installing a generator.
